Pudupettai

Crime.blood, gore, violence and a dose of sex – these are the ingredients that are required for the making of “Pudupettai” Selvaraghavan has taken a colossal period to complete this project and the two most common features his movies still remain intact

1. He still sticks to dark, stark and pessimistic themes
2. His affinity for the dumb sonia agarwal is still potent and no matter what the story is she has to make an appearance or atleast her name should be included in the credits.
Having made these two points clear let me also say that Kollywood has already created a host of gangster movies(pattiyal, chitirum pesu____ ,koki and thalainagaram) and this has become the most prominent flavor of the filmmakers of today.

Now to the story A very simple one to be very frank.Kumar(Dhanush) is first introduced as a rickety beggar. He implores to every person saying hes got a throat operation in the pipeline. He unfortunately gets involved in a police raid and gets beaten up black and blue. Eventually he becomes a part of the gangster gang and ironically takes the leader’s mantle( How he attains this position is one of the greatest comedies of Indian cinema). There are two women in his life – Krishnaveni(Sneha),a prostitute and Selvi(Sonia),the sister of one of his accomplices(How they get married is another insane situation) and overall the movie is simply about the life of the hoodlum Kumar. I don’t think I can be more terse regarding the story

Now about the performances. Being an ardent hater of Dhanush it is very hard to admit that he has put forward a marvellos performance as the protagonist Kumar. One might have heard the saying that even in the darkest of clouds there is a ray of sunshine and Dhanush provides ample warmth to the film. Even though the movie has a lot of frivolous sequences there are a few scenes that still stay fresh like Kumar learning for the first time how to attack a person and his farewell to his child.
Sneha is just not the apt coice for Krishnaveni. I find this hard to accept after seeing her typecast as the simple, meek and always smiling sari clad heroine. I would advise her only to be more careful while selecting her characters. As I mentioned earlier Sonia Agarwal was dumb, is dumb and will forever remain dumb in the rest of her forthcoming movies there is no denial in that. Interestingly Selvaraghavan has made his foray into the realm of politics and he too like other directors has portrayed the malicious facet of it.

Another plus point of the movie is the melodious music. Normally movies of this genre carry a cacyphony that damages the ear drums but here the music alonhg with the background score has turned out to be extremely soothing. Yuvan Shankar Raja has definitely turned out to be the most prolific composers of today.

Should you see the film or not . Its not a “godfather” at the same time it is not an entirely stupid movie.Anyway it’s the holidays and what the hell you are gonna do sitting at home so just rush to the nearest theatre and enjoy the film
