Kramer Vs Kramer

It was a scorching Saturday afternoon when I and a couple of my buddies decided to watch a good matinee movie. With a whole bunch of DVDs at our disposal we had no idea which one to select. One of them had the title “Kramer vs. Kramer” and viewing its summary we learned that it won 6 academy awards. We decided to go with it and I still believe we made the best choice that day. Family drama is a phenomenon I have hardly encountered in Hollywood and I don’t think I would ever find a better movie to cater for this genre.

The film kicks off with Joanna Kramer(Meryl streep) leaving Ted Kramer (Dustin Hoffman) making him the only caretaker of their 6 year old son Billy (Justin Henry). Now Ted has to learn to be a good father as well as maintain his superb efficiency at the office. This backdrop is beautifully festooned with sparkling characters like Margaret (Ted’s friend), John (Ted’s boss cum friend) and Jack (Ted’s lawyer during the custody). Billy loves his mom more than his dad and gets very upset when she leaves them. He resists food, misbehaves and does a whole lot of mischief which only irks Ted. But as time flies he learns that daddy is not such a bad person after all and their relationship is portrayed beautifully. Joanna then asks for Billy to which Ted says no and this sparks off the custody .Who wins and with whom Billy goes forms the rest .There are a lot of scenes that are sure to leave a permanent mark on the viewer and I have randomly listed them out here.

1. Joanna leaving Ted
2. The ice cream scene and then Ted and Billy reconciling.
3. Ted’s blunder in the kitchen.
4. Ted getting a new job.
5. Ted showing his new office to Billy
6. Billy getting hurt in the playground and Ted running him over to the hospital.
7. The whole custody scene.
8. Ted explaining to Billy why he has to go to mommy.
9. The climax
And I still feel I have missed some of them. Dustin Hoffman has given a prolific performance as Ted. His manly voice, his maturity in the field and his overall presence create a potent impression. Meryl Streep has nothing much to do except to cry and look beautiful (similar to our Indian heroines). Next mention goes to Justin. After watching kids in TV serials and some Tamil movies I consider them the most disgusting, overacting and irritating brats depicted on television. But this 6 year old cute, blonde
has made me to reconsider my belief. His simple way of acting is so realistic and his chemistry with Dustin is so awesome. His crying, His joy, his sulking, his pouting can never be forgotten and there are certain scenes which can activate your tear glands. So if you really like to watch good light hearted and a bit of fun movie “K vs. K” is the best bet.
